St. Johns
The birthplace of the iconic St. Johns Bridge, this neighborhood once was a town of its own, and it still feels a bit like stepping into its own little world. You can dig for hard-to-find vintage film at iconic camera shop Blue Moon, or check out Shirtzenpants for curated vintage finds (and sometimes fresh-baked cookies). Families who want to share resources will love Swapnplay, and taking the kids to Wonderwood Springs is always a kid-friendly adventure of all day food, ice cream, board games, and mini golf. Kenton
Originally a company town for meat packing workers, Kenton is known for its can’t-miss 31-foot-tall Paul Bunyan statue. Much of the neighborhood is shaped by its history. The more modest wood-framed houses west of N Denver Ave were built for laborers to live in, while the more extravagant cement-block homes east of N Denver Ave were built for executives to live in. Now, Kenton is an up-and-coming neighborhood, filled with small independent businesses. Beaumont-Wilshire
Beaumont-Wilshire is one of Portland’s older neighborhoods. Filled with tree-lined streets flanked by Craftsmans and Tudor Revivals, Beaumont is a family-oriented and mostly residential neighborhood, with NE Fremont being the primary commercial street. Trust us when we say that once you experience a dozen hot mini Pip’s Donuts and a cup of coffee from Prince, you won’t want to leave. The Alameda Ridge borders this neighborhood, where the Portland grid layout is broken up into an entirely different street pattern to follow the natural geological ridge. From the ridge, you can see beautiful views of the city and you’ll also find hidden stairways among the storybook homes. You’ll also find Wilshire Park in Beaumont, a huge park with an off-leash dog area.
Concordia
This beautiful neighborhood houses part of Portland’s famous Alberta Arts district. In Concordia, you’ll find unique Craftsman and Tudor revival homes, as well as new construction. Concordia is home to NE Ainsworth street, which houses medians full of Norwegian maples and other trees running almost forty blocks from NE MLK to NE 37th, giving the street a Hallmark movie small town feel (complimentary). While most of the neighborhood is residential, you can find anything you need on Alberta, Killingsworth, and NE 33rd. The mozzarella sticks at Gabbiano’s will become your new obsession, and McMenamin’s Kennedy School is a neighborhood favorite for its restaurant, soaking pool, and Boiler Room bar.
Grant Park
One of the most visually charming neighborhoods in Portland, Grant Park is full of beautiful historic homes, especially in the English and Tudor styles, with blooming gardens and tree-lined streets. The 20 acre namesake park is the heart of the neighborhood and has walking paths, a dog park, a community garden, and a pool. Best Neighborhoods in Southeast Portland
Richmond
Full of eccentricities like painted sidewalks and tiny toy horses attached to the streets, and bursting with uniquely detailed Craftsmans and bungalows, Richmond is quintessential Portland. SE Hawthorne and SE Division streets are bustling with local businesses, from thrift shops (Village Merchants is our fave!) to restaurants (Apizza Scholls is a must-experience pizza moment). The rest of the neighborhood is mostly residential, and it is full of sidewalks. Richmond is perfect for families who still want a walkable lifestyle, and singles who want to be in the middle of it all.
Eastmoreland
One of Portland’s most beautiful neighborhoods, Eastmoreland is home to Reed College, whose sprawling campus looks like it was lifted from a dark academia novel. Exploring the neighborhood feels like walking through a storybook, where you’re surrounded by Tudor revivals, huge old trees, and beautiful gardens. Quiet and residential, Eastmoreland is one of the most sought-after neighborhoods in Portland for good reason. While there is no commercial district in the neighborhood proper, Eastmoreland is bordered by Woodstock and Sellwood, both of which are hubs for excellent food and shopping.
Hazelwood
Straddling East Burnside, Hazelwood is partly in Northeast and partly in Southeast. This neighborhood is an often-overlooked gem full of midcentury homes at reasonable prices. Due to its location further out from inner Portland and near I-205, many buyers will skip over this outer East side area, but it’s an up-and-coming neighborhood with lots of family friendly features, like a brand new inclusive play structure at Ventura Park and the newly redesigned Midland Library.
